Are you
interested in Natural Beekeeping?
We have been asked by a couple of new local Top Bar beekeepers if
we could have the occasional meeting here for support etc. Decided to go ahead
and have booked an apiary visit for 2.30 on Sunday 1st April.
You would be most welcome to join us, especially if you are thinking of starting
beekeeping this year.
We now have 3 colonies:
The Lizards - our large colony. They had a heavy varroa load last Autumn
and we couldn't seem to get on top of it with sugar dusting alone. We decided
to use Apilife Var on them, but rather late in the season. Couldn't bring
ourselves to use the winter acid treatment, so just hoping they will be OK
this year. They have survived so far and seem to have stores left, despite
the mild winter. We offered them some fondant before Christmas, but they were
not very interested. We hope to get these into their new, large hive, as soon
as possible in the Spring.
The Dolphins - A tiny caste given to us last year. These have increased
in number and seem to be doing OK, despite all the odds. We fed them very
heavily with syrup last Autumn and fondant all winter, but it was worth it.
We hope to move these into another hive in the Spring, either the Lizards'
present one (with the window), or another new large one.
The Nectans - Our nucleus formed from The Lizards last year. These
are still in a nucleus box, but are filling it at the moment. We need to get
them into a larger hive, as soon as possible, in the Spring too. We have been
feeding them with fondant since before Christmas and they seem ok.
Do let Sue
know on 331700 if you intend to join us on 1st April. We anticipate we'll
meet for about 2 hrs and then have a cuppa & biscuits before departing.
Remember
there are 3 Natural Beekeeping courses being run by The Yarner Trust this
year, by Phil Chandler, at our Apiary. This meeting is not a replacement for
these, it's just intended as a forum for finding out a bit about Top Bar Beekeeping
and/or getting some support.
