Welcombe Village

Childrens Group

About Us
Welcombe Children's Group was formed in 2006 by a group of parents in order to set up events and activities for the children in the parish and to improve the facilities for them.

The committee are: Rosina Dorelli - Chairperson,
Emma Morrison - Secretary and
Alice Gare - Treasurer.

Since setting up the group we have held an annual Easter Party and Halloween Party. We have also held a number of craft days and fundraising events. We hope to increase and develop the events and activities we put on and would welcombe any ideas or suggestions. With the help of grants we have set up the Welcombe Children's Playground. We received £7,500 from the 'Devon Community Foundation', which paid for the low level obstacle course, fencing and picnic benches. We received £12,000 from the Lottery's 'Awards for All' Grant for the play unit with slide and £5,000 from the 'Devon Playing Fields Association' towards the safety surface.

Alice and David at the pottery organised for all the children in the village to make a handprint tile which is now displayed on the wall inside the playarea. The new hedge inside the playarea was kindly donated by a local resident and the children have planted bulbs around the borders.

Please come with your children and enjoy.

Welcombe Family Arts Festival
The first Welcombe Family Arts Festival was a great success. The first day of torrential rain did not dampen anyone’s enthusiasm. A group of hardy Welcombe boys enjoyed building their den in the rain. They proved they could work well as a team and build a structure to stand any weather conditions. By the afternoon, the large driftwood sculptures and the rest of the den building had been moved indoors. The hall was a hive of activity. Hundreds of small driftwood sculptures and colourful mobiles were created and displayed around the hall.

The second day began with stick dancing, which was enjoyed by all. The large dolphin sculptures were finished off and the skittle alley was filled with strips of coloured fabric as the children worked on weaving projects. Flamenco dancing demonstrations and workshops took place in the afternoon in the main hall. As the sun finally made an appearance, the younger children took the opportunity to build a final den outside and display the flags they had made earlier that afternoon.

Day three was a painting extravaganza. The older children formed two groups and each painted a vibrantly coloured 30ft banner, using their hands and their feet. These banners will be used at the Hartland Feast, (a celebration of music and dance) which will be held in the autumn. The younger children were handed large tubes of paint to squeeze over sheets of paper on the floor. They enjoyed the total freedom to use the paint in any way they wanted – hands, feet, squirting, splatting, daubing.

A dragon-making workshop was held. The children made plasticine dragons and paper dragons

An instrument-making workshop also took place that day. Drums, strings, shakers, bells and xylophones of all shapes and sizes. All decorated with vibrant colours and ribbons and ready to use the following day.

Welcombe Children’s Group Easter Activities
Easter craftsThe two-day Easter Crafts at the village hall were a huge success. 37 children together with their parents came and took part. The hall was a hive of activity, smiling faces and intense concentration, which resulted in some amazing pieces of artwork.
Flora Gare led four teams of children aged 6 and upwards, who designed and painted silk banners, showing different aspects of Welcombe: Sea life, Birds, Flora and Fauna and the Night Sky. The finished banners are now displayed in the village hall showing what the next generation of creative talent in the area is capable of.Crafts

Rosina Dorelli led the younger children aged from 2 and a half upwards. They sketched their ideas then painted them on canvas. These can also be seen on display in the village hall.
On the Wednesday the pre-school children were also kept busy with a wide range of toys kindly brought by Bideford Toy Library.

The Easter Holidays finished with the annual Easter Party held on the Saturday. The sun was shining as the children raced around Linton in search of clues for the treasure hunt. The piñata was smashed with great gusto and the last of their energy was spent with the various egg races.
A good time was had by all and the children and adults were exhausted by the end.

Many thanks to those who volunteered their help on the various days and also to those who participated.
