Welcombe Horticultural Show - 50th Anniversary
The Welcombe Garden Show, held at the Village Hall on Saturday 2nd August 2008, celebrated its 50th anniversary. This longevity is a tribute to the willingness of so many contributors to keep this very sociable event running.
We won't mention the weather, but the organisation had, as usual, to stay very flexible to cope with the last minute withdrawals and substitutions ("the slugs/rain/winds got my lettuce/sweet peas, so I brought beans instead"). This is all part of the fun .....
This year the overall number of entries was a little lower than in the recent past. This was largely attributable, not to the national gloom, but to the number of regular contributors - particularly children - who were away, mainly holidaying.
What we lacked in sheer quantity was well compensated for by the high standard of the entries - particularly evident this year in the organic produce on display, which was a dramatic improvement on last year's drought affected entry.
After all the pluses and minuses, there will be a worthwhile financial surplus, most of which goes towards supporting Welcombe Village Hall Appeal Fund.In this connection, Chairman Mike Macer, in his address, mentioned that the contribution in the last year to the Appeal Fund from accumulated surpluses from the show, together with fund raising events organised by the committee, amounted to about £2000.
A special feature at the end of the show was the drawing of the raffle for the beautiful quilt made by the 'Stitch and Chat' group, which meets on Wednesdays at Welcombe Barton. This was won by Jean Goodchild, and the proceeds of over £400 will also go to the Appeal Fund.
Sally Hollis made a very popular return to the village to present the prizes, and the judges were as follows:
Flowers and Vegetables
- Mr & Mrs Shapland
Organic Section - Rob Meredith
Cookery and Produce - Bernadette Sluggett
Hobbies - Cynthia May
Children's Section - Bridget Macaire
Many thanks from the committee to all these volunteers and to all contributors.
