STUBBLE
BURNING AT WEST MILL;
We're planning to burn gorse on the cliff-edge at West Mill, Marsland on Tuesday
31st January, starting at 9.30. That's weather-permitting, and will
postpone till the following day if bad weather So please don't be alarmed
if you see plumes of smoke coming from that direction. We will be notifying
fire service, coastguard and police.
We would welcome a hand from volunteers, willing to wield a fire-beater if
necessary. Meet at West Mill at 9.20. Coffee/tea/soup provided!
Andrew and Briony Lawson
The phone was removed from the Phone Box on 6th January, rumour has it that the parish council has bought the box. Maybe it's time for a clean and paint up? Any suggestions to Merv
Applications
are invited for the The Prince of Wales' Award 2012
This has been presented at the Devon County Show for over 30 years and was
originally for individuals contributing most to the agricultural industry
in Devon.
Over the years
the criteria have changed and the Award is now open to community organisations,
schools etc. which have, through their own initiative, brought about improvements
to the lives of the rural population in a sustainable manner. The Award is
intended to embrace a wide range of schemes where there has been a genuine
attempt to move forward in a resourceful and inventive way to the benefit
of a rural community.
Closing date for the Award Friday 24th February
Any queries, please telephone Julie Wallace on 01392 353710
New Secondary
School - Richard Bence writes:-
"For the past few months I have been working with an incredible group
of people in our area. We have formed a steering group with the aim of setting
up a new secondary school right in the heart of our rural community, close
to the A39 between Kilkhampton and Clovelly.
Some have thought us a little crazy trying to put a new school in the countryside but we have done extensive research to prove it is both needed and viable. We have also met with both Devon and Cornwall County Councils who are both fully supportive. We have also visited and spoken to a wide range of schools (both local and national), education providers and organisations to find the best systems of teaching and running a school.
We recognise there has been some concern that we could adversely affect existing schools. To answer that, both Devon and Cornwall County Councils have told us that there is a big growth in the number of families coming to our area. They believe that if we don't create a new secondary school then within a few years there won't be enough places in our existing schools. We need at least one new secondary school.
This gives us the opportunity to act first to put it in our rural area rather than a local town. This will provide the widest area with a choice of secondary school, something that has been missing for far too long. It will also enable us to provide for our local children and the wider community, supplementing outstanding GCSE and A Level courses with learning on agriculture, horticulture, crafts along with other rural and business skills.
We now need the input, views and support of our community to make this idea a reality. We have put together a proposal for a new school which we are presenting to the community in a series of meetings (see below) to get feedback and suggestions.
I am asking for
your support in making sure as many local people as possible know about this
proposal and come to our meetings. Please can you let all your friends, family
and groups you are involved with of these meetings and encourage them to attend.
We need a both yours and a wide range of local peoples views of this proposal
I would encourage all to attend so we can get a true impression of the depth
of support. If we get the support and this new school becomes a reality, I
truly believe this will be one of the most important and positive developments
for our community in some time, it is crucial that everyone in the community
gets involved to make sure it is the best school we can possibly provide.

British
Trust for Ornithology Survey
Felicity Cole has been watching for and listing birds in Welcombe, Henaford
and Meddon over the last year. She says "This is part of a country-wide,
four-year effort to map the distribution of species in winter and summer organised
by the BTO - British Trust for Ornithology. As I live in Wimbledon most of
the time (and am not the sharpest of watchers ) there must be gaps in this
list that human residents could fill. The lists close at the end of October
and anybody with bird sightings and dates can contribute on line - that elusive
marsh harrier maybe? Is there a Rookery somewhere? Evidence of breeding is
particularly desirable.
It has been tremendously interesting for me and I am truly grateful to all the kind landowners who have let me walk their fields and woods. It's good to see so much sensitive husbandry of the land. A disappointment/irritation has been that the survey didn't actually include the patch of Welcombe where our house -Moons House-is, so those Grasshopper warblers and Ravens and Bullfinches and Marsh tits and other treasures went unrecorded. Another annoyance is that all "my" birds got bundled into Cornwall! I think the best day was April 10th, when I stopped to peer into the great field of stubble to the right of the turning down to Henaford. There were migrating Wheatears bobbing up and down as far as I could see down it. On the strength of that I looked into a series of other meadows; they were there too and in the field below the Barton. Next day - all gone."

not including- Meddon.

Welcombe
Beekeeping
There is an opportunity for people wishing to keep bees in Welcombe,
using Top Bar Hives promoted in the Natural Beekeeping courses by Phil Chandler
at the Yarner Trust.
Sue Dollimore and Jim Morrison both keep bees using this method and have enough to cope with. It would be helpful to have others to run hives in the village and so increase the local bee population. There would also be the opportunity to share stock and expertise. Sue and Jim would be happy to offer help and support. If anyone wants to keep bees but does not have enough space, there are several sites available where people are happy to house the bees but not look after them. Sue and Jim have a blog where there are pictures of their Top Bar hives and a link to a video taken on the last course. suejimsnaturalbeekeeping.blogspot.com
It would be helpful to have done the ‘Introduction to Beekeeping ‘Course at the Yarner in September 2011 (1 place left) or Spring 2012 and the conventional Beekeeping course with Holsworthy Beekeepers over the coming winter see www.holsworthybeekeepers.org.uk .
If this is of interest, please contact Sue Dollimore 01288 331 700 welcombedollimores@yahoo.co.uk or the Yarner Trust 01288 331 692 for further information.
