National Trust takes over Welcombe Mouth
The Devon Wildlife Trust has gifted 26 hectares of it's land at Welcombe Mouth to the National Trust. The National Trust will work closely with the village community to ensure high quality and appropriate access as well as protecting the landscape and wildlife. Repairs have already been made to the track and a new gate has been installed which will be kept shut. Please always ensure that you close the gate behind you when visiting the beach. The Trust intends to undertake some archaeological and biological surveys in the area.

The Welcombe Children's Committee are pleased to report that they have now received a grant of £10,000 from Awards for All to buy a play unit with slide, climbing wall and clatter bridge. It will be installed by Playline Design by the beginning of September. We are hoping they can do it sooner, but they have not confirmed on this yet. Thank you to everyone who has donated money and supported fundraising events to raise the remaining money needed to pay for the play unit and the safety surface.

Launceston to Lagos by Bike
Cycle logo
In June 2008 Michael Yeomans and Matt Parnall will undertake their toughest challenge so far – cycling from Cornwall to the Portuguese Algarve. 1250 miles, 4 countries, 2 friends, 1 charitable cause.

They are two University students who have completed numerous endurance events, such as the London Marathon and the Devizes to Westminster Kayak Marathon, and are now setting about completing something bigger. They will be cycling from Launceston in Cornwall down through France, the Pyrenees and Spain to the most southern coast of Portugal. All being well it will take 3 weeks, though they will be training and campaigning from now until June! They both live in the South West and hope to be able to raise some money for a local charity where they can make a real difference. They are aiming to involve as many people and organisations as they can in order to truly maximise the potential of this endeavour.

The aforementioned charity is the Children’s Hospice South West www.chsw.org.uk. All the children who use the Hospice will have Life Limiting, or Life Threatening Conditions, which mean that they are not expected to live into adulthood. Some families may use the hospice for many years from the time the child is first diagnosed, they may come for planned respite, or for emergency care. Michael & Matt hope that their aid can make a genuine difference in the care that they offer.

If you would like to be involved with this event, or indeed if you would simply like to make a donation please visit our website www.launceston-lagos.com where you can find all the relevant links, itinerary and contact details. All donations to this excellent cause will qualify for Gift Aid, which adds an extra 28% from tax, enabling the charity to make the most of every penny pledged. Any support will be deeply appreciated.
