Phil Chandler
running the Yarner Trust's Natural Beekeeping course in Sue & Mick's field
April 2010
'Welcombe has new beekeepers! Jim Morrison and Sue Dollimore have been learning
about how to keep bees for the last year and now have a small apiary at the
bottom of Sue's field. Their collective aim is to develop the bee population
in Welcombe so that all our plants and vegetation get thoroughly pollinated.
They are keeping their bees in Top Bar Hives, which are long wooden boxes
with bars of wood laid across the top of the frame. The bees then draw natural
comb down from each bar in an elongated semi circle. This is quite a change
from the conventional method that many people will know about, but if you
would like to know more please speak to Jim or Sue. Both Jim and Sue have
now had a fair amount of experience handling bees so if you find a feral bee
swarm in your garden or chimney they would be happy to come and pick it up.
Please give them a call on 331700 (Sue) or 331389 (Jim) and the intrepid duo
will come to the rescue. See their blog at: www.suejimsnaturalbeekeeping.blogspot.com

Update
from Ali Stubbs!
T he votes for the Drambuie Challenge in May have closed and we won!
After some fantastic support from 6,702 odd voters, not only did we come top
(and led for 99% of the time) but we made history by being the first all female
team to win and actually get into the Challenge which is tremendous. A big
THANK YOU to everyone who kindly took the time to place a vote and encourage
others to do the same. For that reason Cornwall Air Ambulance will receive
£2,500 and in May we get to be put through the endurance challenge of
a lifetime!
Courses
For Everybody
There’s
really good news from the Yarner Trust in Welcombe this year
to lift your spirits and welcome in the spring.
Yarner would
like to encourage more people to enjoy their inspiring courses, and have created
a bursary to help fund places on courses. A generous legacy from one of their
founders, Tom Welch, has made sure that courses remain within everyone’s
reach. Anyone can apply and it’s a very simple process, so just call
Yarner on 01288-331692 or email
and they’ll help you get started. All they ask in return is your honesty
in paying the full rate where you can afford to do so.
Just some
of the new courses that might inspire you include Stone Carving, Cheese Making,
Beekeeping and beauty products. Not forgetting their popular favourites such
as Lime Rendering, Yurt Making and Smallholding. There’s also a special
4 day Butterfly Break where you get a mini holiday as well
as exploring Devon Wildlife Trust’s nature reserve at Marsland.

issues, ask questions about the way services are run and make recommendations
about changing existing and future health and social care services.
Do you have a story?
We hold quarterly events for people in Cornwall ( and Welcombe is included)
to come along and share their views on what they think is working and is not
working well with health and social care services.
